The Fox Demon Fandom

Julie and I have been kicking ideas back and forth on a possible Fox Demon fanfiction.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with Xiaowei the Fox Demon (portrayed magnificently by actress Zhou Xun), here's the full movie, Painted Skin 2: The Resurrection.  Needless to say, the fox demon has become an obsession of mine.

You don't need to watch the first movie to understand this one (the far superior version, by the way).  The prequel is summed up in the very first line of the sequel: 500 years before the start of this story, a fox demon violated demon law by saving the life of a mortal man, and was sentenced to imprisonment in an icy abyss.

I'll shut up now.

  1. Someone explain something to me. The Fox Demon keeps saying she was sentenced to 500 year imprisonment, not eternity. Well, then technically she's finished her sentence at the beginning of the film. So why's the abyss still stalking her?

    1. I think I'm the only one on here besides you who knows what you're talking about, haha! I don't know why there's that anomaly, but I do know that 500-yr imprisonments is a very classic number. The Monkey King was imprisoned for that amount too. Bad writing? Or bad translation?

  2. She wasn't sentenced to 500 years. She just keeps saying she was imprisoned for that duration. It isn't exactly mentioned how long the sentence it, but from the Chinese name of the Icy Abyss, its probably forever.

    1. Yay! You came! And thanks for the clarification. What is the Chinese name of the Icy Abyss?

Damn...eternity, huh? Demon law doesn't play.

    2. Hanbing Diyu. Diyu is a name for hell which already implies a heck of a long time. I do like sound of Icy Abyss better than Freezing Hell though :P

And since we got our ideas of hell from Buddhism, it is probably not eternal and she will eventually be released. Of course, eventual could be "when this world dies and everyone dies with it and all the souls are reborn into the new world."

Also, it's actually Heavenly Law and yeah, it doesn't play at all.

      Boss!

I mean, damn...she rescued a couple of humans and was promptly put on ice.

      Damn.

    4. I think the idea is that having a demon save humans is unnatural. Because their place in life is to harm humans.

Or it could be that she used the powers she gained from Daoist practice to do it.

I'm not entirely sure, but it should be something along those lines. These details are not the same in every story about Chinese demons. But whatever it is the writers picked, they did so because they want it to be all melancholic and make you cry.
